Odwalla’s new bottle initiative

Odwalla is “planting” the sustainable seed with their new bottle initiative. Coming in 2011, the popular smoothie company will transition to 100% PlantBottle™ packaging. And we wanted you to be the first to know about their new initiative!

Next year is looking even greener for Odwalla. The natural health beverage company announced today its plans to transition all of the brand’s single-serve bottles to PlantBottle™ packaging, HDPE made of up to 100% plant-based materials* and 100 percent recyclable, in March 2011.

The new Odwalla package will help to reduce dependence on nonrenewable resources. For example, the potential annual CO2 emission reduction from the use of plant-based material, instead of petroleum, to make Odwalla’s PlantBottle™ packaging is equal to a savings of almost 400,000 gallons of gas.

“Plants do such a good job of making our juice, Odwalla hired them to help make our bottles,” said Alison Lewis, President, Odwalla. “Doing good things for the community and building a business with heart are core guiding principles of Odwalla’s vision. PlantBottle™ packaging is just the latest step in our continued commitment to the environment.”

Combined with Odwalla’s Plant A Tree Program, which has planted over 300,000 trees in the last 3 years, and Odwalla’s Bloom Energy Fuel Cell technology commencing at Odwalla’s plant in Dinuba, CA – which reduces the plant’s carbon footprint by 35 percent while supplying 30 percent of the plant’s energy needs— PlantBottle™ packaging is the latest step in Odwalla’s efforts and innovations to reduce dependence on nonrenewable resources.

PlantBottle™ packaging consists of material derived from molasses and sugarcane juice. It has the same performance as traditional HDPE and PET bottles: no differences in shelf life, weight, composition or appearance. PlantBottle™ HDPE can be recycled again and again in today’s recycling facilities. The redesigned plastic represents a significant step in our sustainability efforts and in protecting the planet.

The 7 Chakras (and why you should know them)

If you don’t know already, the seven Chakras are the energy centres in our body, where energy comes together and flows.

Often, these energy centres become blocked. And blocked energy in our Chakras can lead to illness.

If we know what each Chakra represents, we can be more mindful to keeping them open, and, therefore, helping the energy flow freely.

The Root Chakra

The Root Chakra represents our foundation and the sensation of being grounded. It is located at the base of the spine in the tailbone area. The Root Chakra is connected to personal survival matters, such as finances, food, shelter.

To heal the Root Chakra, use yoga postures, such as Bridge Pose and Wheel, to open the lower spine. Take a moment in mountain or tree to become grounded. Munch on red coloured foods, such as beets, hot spices, and vegetables from the ground (like potatoes).

The Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra represents our ability to connect with others and accept new experiences.It is located at the lower abdomen, about 2 inches below the navel. The Sacral Chakra is connected to pleasure, sexuality, and well being.

To heal the Sacral Chakra, use yoga postures such as pelvic tilting and cobra. Snack on orange coloured foods, such as oranges, along with nuts.

The Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra represents our ability to be confident and in control of our lives and our selves. It is located in the upper abdomen, around the stomach. It is connected to self-confidence and self-esteem.

To heal the Solar Plexus Chakra, try the yoga posture Boat pose, along with yellow foods such as corn, plenty of grains, and good tea.

The Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra represents our ability to love. It is located in the centre of the chest, just above the heart. It is connected to love, joy, and inner piece.

To heal the Heart Chakra, try Bikram yoga and emoting love to others. Try green foods, such as leafy greens, broccoli and green beans, as well as green tea.

The Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra represents our ability to communicate with ourselves and others. It is located in the throat. It is connected to self-expression and the truth.

To heal the Throat Chakra, sing, chant and vocalize. Inverted postures also help. All kinds of fruit also benefit this chakra.

The Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye Chakra represents our ability to focus on the big picture. It is located on the forehead between the eyes. It is connected to our imagination, wisdom, and ability to think and make decisions.

To heal the Third Eye Chakra, opt for foward bends, as well as child’s pose. Enjoy purple fruits and vegetables, such as eggplant and grapes, along with lavender scents and flavours.

The Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually. It is located at the very top of the head. It is connected to inner beauty, outer beauty, and our connection to pure happiness and bliss.

To heal the Crown Chakra, try meditation and clearing your head through cardiovascular exercise. Clean air, sunshine, and a sense of calmness help.

Reprogram Your Physique and Health

In order to improve our health and physique, we all want to get the most out of our training. I look around and see many people busting their humps every week, without making much of a change (if any) to their appearance.  Hard work is great, and essential to reaching your goals.  But it also takes some smarts!  Below are two tips to help you make noticeable improvements in your health and physique.

Work That Back!

You may have heard this advice before: to prevent muscular imbalances and to stay healthy, make sure that you use a balanced lifting routine (i.e. an equal amount of pulling as pushing).  Theoretically, this is great advice.  Unfortunately, we live in a society that has set us up for failure when it comes to improving our posture/physique.  A “balanced” routine only makes sense if you have no (or minimal) imbalances to begin with.  But too many of us spend the majority of our time hunched over in front of the computer; driving in a car; hunched over on the couch watching TV/playing video games, and the list goes on.  Plus, if you are the typical guy, you have done WAY more pushing (bench pressing) than pulling (rows) up to this point in your lifting career.

If the above sounds all too familiar, make sure to spend more time (at least a 2:1 ratio) pulling than pushing.  Pulling in the horizontal plane would be especially beneficial for you (rows).  And if you are starting to resemble the Hunchback of Notre Dame, make push-ups your pushing movement of choice, rather than more bench pressing (at least until you start to “balance out”).

The above tips are all good and dandy, but if you are NOT doing your job outside the weight room, a few extra sets of rows won’t do a lot for you.  In other words, make a conscious effort to reduce the amount of time you spend sitting down with rounded shoulders.  It’s a 24/7 job, but if you want to see results, you can do it!

Don’t Fear Fat!

We were brought up being told that fat is the devil and that we should avoid it all costs.  This led to an increase in carbohydrate consumption (often times processed/refined carbs), and an increase of health related diseases such as diabetes.  Most of us interested in the field of fitness now realize that there are many benefits to fat and that it neednt be avoided like the plague.  Unfortunately, there are still many misinformed people who fear this macronutrient. More times than not, when I sit down with a new client for our first nutrition talk, this is what I hear; “when shopping I usually make sure to look for reduced fat and/or fat free items.”

In my opinion, this is a mistake.  IF the food comes from a high quality source, we should consume the full fat version.  Give me some eggs from free-range chickens, and I’m eating that egg, yolk ‘n all.  Beef from grass-fed cows I don’t mind that there is some saturated fat going down my gullet.  As nutrition expert Brian St. Pierre has written:

Let’s jump back to dairy and cardiovascular disease. Whole fat dairy from grass-fed cows contains a boatload of powerful vitamins and healthful fatty acids. These vitamins are fat-soluble, meaning they are bonded to the fatty acids in the dairy, and are therefore nearly non-existent in fat-free dairy. The fat is where vitamins A, D, E and K2 are, as well as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), butyric acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and medium chain triglycerides. Low-fat and fat-free dairy are woefully lacking in these properties.

You should note that dairy from grass-fed cows contain significantly more of these nutrients than dairy from grain-fed cows. For example, research has shown that the milk fat from grass-fed cows has 500% more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than the milk fat from grain-fed cows! 500%!

If you are the type of person that looks for every fat-free food in existence, you are missing some of the benefits that Brian mentions above.  The key is to make sure you purchase real, unprocessed whole foods that come from a high quality source.

Summary

If you are a fat-phobe, I hope this makes you think twice about ditching all full-fat foods for their fat-free/reduced fat “cousins.”  And Mr. Bench press guy, yeah you – don’t forget that you have a backside to your body and that you need to put a bigger emphasis on your horizontal pulling.  And to everyone, no more spending all day hunched over the computer.  Give up off your butt’s and MOVE!  Like. Right. Now…

Why being Overweight is Not Good:

In earlier times people thought that the more fat you are the stronger you are. Now latest studies and researches told us that this concept is totally wrong. Being fat has no link with being strong. But being fat has a strong link with being affected by many diseases that are common among people nowadays.

Here I would like to mention just few of those diseases:

  1. Heart Problems

Heart is the symbol of life. You will live only the time your heart pumps blood to your body. Heart is a one big organ that consists of many other small tissues and links to all parts of body. When fat increases in the body it becomes difficult for heart to pump the blood at the same rate. So it leads to certain heart issues that have dangerous effects on your living.

  1. Kidney Diseases

Kidney handles filtering blood from other waste products. Fats accumulated in blood make their ways to kidneys. The result will hinder the filtration process. This leads to certain chronic (kidney) diseases including kidney stone and many others.

  1. Blood Pressure Issues

Blood pressure is regarded as the pressure at which the heart pumps the blood to the body when arteries and veins accumulate fat in them. Heart has to push and pump the blood harder and harder into body so that it could reach all parts of body. This leads to certain blood pressure issues including hypertension, stress etc. Blood Pressure is a dangerous disease along with it. It opens doors for many other diseases to attack you.

  1. Pregnancy Issues:

No matter how much weight you gain during pregnancy but still there is a limit of that gained weight. If your weight loss limit is crossed it could lead you to many diseases. As a result when they grow abnormally they became cancerous.

After running or in some cases walking for a few yards you feel out of breath. You could not continue your activity because you are out of breath. Stopping smoking during pregnancy reduces health risks to babies

Professor Nick Macklon, a gynaecologist at the Princess Anne hospital in Southampton, UK, has told the annual conference at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology this week that stopping smoking as late as when pregnancy is confirmed can mean that newborns avert many of the dangers faced by babies whose mothers smoke.

In a study of 50,000 pregnancies at Southampton hospitals between 2002 and 2010, women who gave up smoking early in their pregnancy had babies that were the same weight as those of women who did not smoke. The risk of premature birth was also reduced, as well as the risk of brain damage and congenital defects, such as cleft palate.

Professor Macklon said that a significantly higher birth weight was found in those babies whose mothers had stopped smoking right up to the 15th week of pregnancy:

“Not only was birth weight much better in this group than it was in the groups where the mothers had continued to smoke, but we also found that the babies reached the same gestational age and head circumference as those born to women who had never smoked.”

He also emphasised that the risks of disease in later life associated with a low birth weight were also reduced:

“It is important that people who believe that a smaller baby means an easier birth take into account the increased risks of complicated deliveries in smokers, as well as the risk of disease later in life which goes with low birth weight.”

After a report from Australian researchers last month found that smoking during pregnancy results in lower levels of ‘good’ cholesterol in children as old as eight years of age, this new study could encourage would-be mothers who smoke to give up as soon as pregnancy is confirmed, as there are clearly benefits to be gained.

Smoking is also known to be detrimental for women trying to conceive as it causes premature ageing of the ovaries, resulting in low fertility rates, early menopause and a higher risk of miscarriage.

National recall of cucumbers over salmonella

L&M Companies Inc. has issued a national recall of whole cucumbers because of the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Raleigh, N.C.-based L&M said in a press release issued on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site that no illnesses have been reported in association with this recall, and no other products are involved other than this one lot of cucumbers.

The recalled product was directly distributed by L&M Companies between March 30 and April 7 to wholesalers in New York (200 cartons), Florida (591 cartons), Illinois (139 cartons), Indiana (30 cartons) and Tennessee (15 cartons), and one retailer with distribution centers in Mississippi (420 cartons), Nebraska (92 cartons), Texas (2 cartons) and Wyoming (101 cartons).

“L&M Companies is issuing a nationwide recall out of an abundance of caution because the company recognizes the possibility that wholesale customers could have redistributed the product in states beyond those listed above,” according to the company.

The recalled lot of bulk cucumbers was harvested in South Florida on March 29. Cucumbers typically maintain an edible quality for 10-14 days after harvest, according to the company.

“L&M Companies takes food safety seriously, and we are committed to the customers and consumers who buy our products every day. Our farms are third-party, food safety certified, and they follow good agriculture practices,” said Lee Anne Oxford, company representative. “Even though the recalled lot was only directly distributed to a hand full of states, we are issuing this nationwide, voluntary recall to reduce even the slightest risk to public health.” …
