Aromatherapy for Depression

There are a lot of reasons you can get depressed. You can lose a loved one, a beloved pet, or your job. You can get divorced, be physically or emotionally abused, or be under a lot of emotional or financial stress. Some people get depressed when they retire, because it is a major lifestyle change. Some people are just depressed because they are lonely.

No matter what the reason for the depression, whether it is chronic or acute, aromatherapy may help. What can you use to help your depression? Room diffusers, air fresheners/room sprays, massage oils, and skin and hair care products can all be used to release energizing oils that can help uplift your mood. And don’t forget the bath and shower. Bath oils and salts can also help relax your muscles. As for the shower, try putting a couple of drops on the back of the tub (where it won’t come in contact with your skin). The heat and steam from the shower will give you an aromatic shower. If you are traveling or at work, you can do something as simple as put a couple of drops of an essential oil on a cotton ball and carry it around with you.

What types of essential oils should you look for? Roman chamomile is a calming scent that many believe is a natural sedative. Lavender has been used for years to help calm the mind and relieve stress. Clary sage is also used by aromatherapists to help restore emotional equilibrium. If you like a more citrus smell, give mandarin a try. Sandalwood is another ancient scent that has been used to relieve depression.

Of course, you will need to check with your physician because aromatherapy is generally viewed as a complementary health modality, i.e., it can be used to compliment traditional and alternative depression medications.

Starting out on a healthy eating plan

Starting out on a healthy eating plan can prove to be a daunting experience and one which takes both dedication and determination. A great tip to follow when beginning such a plan is to start out slow and at a pace that suits your individual needs. You should make small changes to your eating habits over time instead of making one drastic change straight away. Trying to radically change your diet overnight isn’t wise or realistic. Changing every factor of your current diet usually leads to you cheating or giving up on your new healthy eating plan.
Small steps, such as swapping your normal lunch to a healthy salad will help. Your salad should consist of different coloured vegetables, as the more colours on your dish the higher the energy content you will receive. As well as being healthy, it also gives your body lots of nutrients and vitamins, which are essential for your body. Vitamin C and Vitamin D are both important to include in your meals.
Other tricks and tips such as switching to butter instead of olive oil when cooking as this will also aid in creating a healthy eating plan. As your initial small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices to your diet.
Every change, even the little ones you make to improve your diet, will make a difference. You should be sensible about building your new diet plan, don’t completely remove the foods you enjoy, just enjoy them in moderation or as a treat now and then.
The long term goal of embarking on such a diet is to create a healthy eating plan that will make you feel both healthy and happy, which will in turn boost your energy levels and reduce the risk of various ailments and diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
There are a range of health food stores on the market that house an assortment of healthy and tasty products, one such store is Holland & Barrett. This particular brand has a range of offers in store including buy two products and get the third free.
