UH Cancer Center receives $3.58M for mesothelioma research

The University of Hawaii Cancer Center has received a $3.58 million gift from an anonymous donor to support mesothelioma research. It is the second-largest gift that the research institute has ever received, the center said.

The mesothelioma research is being conducted by Michele Carbone, director of the UH Cancer Center, along with Haining Yang and Giovanni Gaudino.

Mesothelioma is a disease that causes malignant cancer cells to form within the lining of the chest, abdomen or around the heart. Its primary cause is believed to be exposure to asbestos.

The UH Cancer Center is affiliated with the University of Hawaii Manoa and is one of 65 centers across the nation that are designated by the National Cancer Institute. The center is currently building a research facility in Kakaako, which is scheduled to open in 2013.

Report: Hunger kills five children in flood-stricken Pakistan

Islamabad – Five children have died of malnutrition in the north-western region of Pakistan hit hard by the floods currently plaguing the country, a media report said on Sunday.

The first reported deaths due to lack of food in flood-affected areas took place in Kohistan, a mountainous district cut off from the rest of the country since the rising waters washed away bridges and roads.

There was a huge food crisis in different flood-stricken parts of the district, local politician Abdul Sattar Khan told Dawan television. Five children had already died of malnutrition, he said.

“The number of casualties, due to malnutrition, is expected to rise if the Karakorum highway and other connecting routes are not opened to bring in food for the flood victims,” Khan told the television station.

“The government has completely failed in coordinating relief efforts for the flood victims,” he added.

The surging waters that devastated the north-western region before sweeping across large areas in central and southern parts of the country have affected 20 million people and killed around 1,400.

The United Nations has appealed for 460 million dollars to assist the six million people in dire need of food, shelter and medicine.

The UN chief Ban Ki-moon, who visited Pakistan on Sunday, urged the world community “to speed up assistance to the Pakistani people.”

“We are trying to mobilize all the necessary assistance, and remember that the whole world is behind the people of Pakistan at this time of trial,” Ban said after his plane landed at an army airbase near Islamabad.

Urgent care center opening in Kenosha

Two doctors and a nurse practitioner plan on opening an urgent care center in Kenosha Aug. 1.

Kenosha Urgicare will specialize in the treatment of acute care illnesses that are non-life threatening, according to the clinic’s website.

Fredd Butler, a spokesman for the project, said the clinic will provide an alternative to the “heavily burdened medical service industry in the Kenosha and Racine area by offering short wait times and friendly personalized service.”

Kenosha residents currently are served by Aurora Heath Care and United Hospital System.

“Those are giants,” Butler said. “We’re just a stand-alone clinic trying to be a little bit more personalized.”

Butler anticipates serving 25 to 30 patients a day. The clinic, which will be located in front of the Lowe’s store at 6430 W. Green Bay Road, will be about 3,000 square feet and have four patient rooms.

Dirty secrets of clean shop towels uncovered

Environmental and risk science consulting firm Gradient reports that clean shop towels could be a source of heavy metal exposure for manufacturing industry workers in the United States.

It is typical in the U.S. manufacturing industry that workers are provided with shop towels for wiping themselves and the equipment they use. The towels are collected by industrial launderers, washed and redistributed.

Who would imagine that freshly laundered clean towels could be putting nearly 12 million American workers at risk? The industries included in the study range from equipment manufacturing to printing, from aviation and automotive work to food and beverage packaging.

Twenty-nine metals were studied, with those found in remarkable amounts in shop towels including the heavy metals antimony, beryllium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, lead, and molybdenum. The concern is that the heavy metals can be transferred from the towels to the hands and mouths of the workers, leading to ingestion of the heavy metals.

Gradient estimated the possible amounts of heavy metals that could be taken from the towels and compared the estimates to allowed levels based on guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, and to the California Environmental Protection Agency’s (CalEPA) Proposition 65 regulatory limits for cancer or reproductive effects.

They report that for the worker using the typical amount of towels per day, average exposure to the heavy metals listed above is higher than the allowed levels, which may lead to health problems, including cancer.

As an added twist, the shop towels may introduce metals that are not otherwise in a facility, again increasing the risks to the workers, who cannot even see, smell, or feel the heavy metal contaminants.

Barbara Beck, Ph.D., DABT, principal at Gradient, said in a press release from the firm that “Manufacturers face an unexpected worker exposure issue: workers using just one or two shop towels a day may be exposed to elevated levels of heavy metals, compared to health-based exposure guidelines.” She explained further “Without knowing it, manufacturing workers may be ingesting certain heavy metals at elevated levels from this unexpected source. For some of these metals, the amounts ingested may be greater than allowed in drinking water on a daily basis. Because towels are used and then laundered multiple times and are often delivered to different companies each time, workers may even be exposed to metals that do not otherwise exist in their work environment.”

Health Screening Checklist for Women

Most of us hate to think about it, but screenings are a way to keep us healthy. You are probably afraid that something bad may be found, but if you think about it, early detection is a good thing.

So what are the 10 health screenings every woman should ask her doctor for? First of all, have your blood pressure checked. I think every time I go to the doctor, no matter what it is for, I get my blood pressure checked. You can have it checked at local pharmacies if nothing else.

It may be harder to get your cholesterol checked, but just as important. Out of control cholesterol leads to heart disease. If your reading is high, don’t panic, just set your mind to making positive changes in your diet and start exercising.

Going hand in hand with the blood pressure and cholesterol screening is the blood glucose test. I have a family history of diabetes, so this is especially important for me. While I may not be able to avoid becoming diabetic, I certainly hope to starve it off as long as possible.

While you may hate thinking about it, you should also have a BMI (body mass index). Yes, none of us want to know we are fat, but hearing someone tell you that you may be at serious risk for heart disease or diabetes often gets you set on the right track to healthy living.

Skin examinations are important too. We’ve probably all spent too much time out in the sun with too little protection. If you see a spot that has changed in some way, point it out to your primary care manager.

Perhaps the most dreaded screening by women is a pap smear and pelvic exam. Yes, it is often uncomfortable, psychologically if not physically, but very important, so just put on your big girl panties as they say, and have it done.

Another uncomfortable test is a mammogram. Women with small breasts complain that it hurts, but so do women with big breast. But women who have lost their breasts to cancer might wish they had that pain back. If you are 40 or older, you should have a mammogram once every year or two.

Once you turn 50, you should begin having colon cancer screenings. Fortunately, this only needs to be done once every 5 to 10 years. Once you turn 65, you should get a bone density screening. After the age of 65, we become susceptible to osteoporosis and this screening will so any risks that you may have.

Finally, the last thing many people hate to have done is to visit the dentist. You might be surprised how your dental health can affect the rest of your health.

Just remember the old saying – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Dry Eye Syndrome Common in Winter

SATURDAY, Jan. 29 Dry eye syndrome is common in winter because of cold, dry outdoor air and dry indoor heat, says an eye expert.

Symptoms include pain, blurred vision, a scratchy or burning sensation, or even watery eyes as the eyes try to compensate for the dryness, explains Pittsburgh-area ophthalmologist Dr. Michael Azar.

“Because both dry eye and allergies can cause watery eyes, differentiating the two conditions can be difficult and may require an eye exam,” he said in a news release from the Institute for Good Medicine at the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

Dry eye can occur at any age, but is more common among older adults, especially post-menopausal women. In some people, dry eye syndrome may be related to:

  • Conditions that affect the ability to produce tears, such as scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, and collagen vascular diseases.
  • Certain medications, such as diuretics, antihistamines and beta blockers.
  • Eyelid structural problems that prevent them from closing properly.

Azar outlined some ways to deal with dry eye syndrome.

“Try artificial tears or warm compresses to assist with tear secretion if you have classic dry eye symptoms. At home, a furnace humidifier or room humidifier can help. More severe symptoms may require treatment such as oral doxycycline to improve tear quality, punctal plugs [stoppers inserted into the tear duct], topical steroids or topical cyclosporine (Restasis),” he said.

For most people, dry eye is simply a nuisance.

“However, severe dry eye can make you vulnerable to corneal infections, which can permanently affect your vision,” said Azar. If artificial tears don’t work, schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist, he advised.
